After the age of 45, women enter a new stage of life – menopause. Its main sign is the cessation of menstruation, which means a serious restructuring of the reproductive system due to a decrease in the level of female sex hormones – estrogens and progesterone. In fact, changes occur in almost the entire body, because hormonal fluctuations are controlled by one of the parts of the brain – the pituitary gland, and receptors to estrogens are found in many tissues. Thus, menopause affects the functions of many organs and systems – the heart, vascular, nerves, and thyroid gland. The condition of the skin, hair and mucous membranes is noticeably modifying. Unfortunately, many menopausal changes can create significant discomfort and reduce the quality of life.

So, what happens to the body during menopause?

  • The structure of the body is changing: the volume and strength of muscles decreases, the amount of adipose tissue increases, and the contours of the figure become heavier and rounded.
  • The skin getting drier and less elastic, as the fibroblasts of the dermis produce less collagen and hyaluronic acid in response to a decrease in estrogen levels.
  • The mucous membranes of the intimate area moisturize worse, which can cause problems in the sexual sphere.
  • The musculature of the pelvis weaken, it can lead to urinary incontinence by coughing or sneezing.
  • Vascular walls lose elasticity, increasing the risk of hypertension, headaches and cardiovascular disorders.
  • Changes in the functioning of the vascular system and thyroid gland cause the occurrence of hot flashes. This is a sudden redness of the skin in the face, neck, shoulders and chest, accompanied by a feeling of heat and sweating. When such attacks occur at night, it causes sudden awakening and an unpleasant feeling of anxiety. Sleep disorder and lack of night rest significantly affect well-being and reduce the quality of life decreases.
  • The nervous system also does not stay away: during this period we have less control over our emotions, are more prone to pessimism and depressive moods. Sometimes there are outbursts of anger and irritability, at other times we feel a breakdown, apathy and self-pity. We get upset more often and even cry.
  • In the evening it can be difficult to relax and fall asleep; sleep becomes more shallow and restless.

To relieve the uncomfortable symptoms of menopause modern medicine widely recommends hormone replacement therapy (HRT). However, a quite significant part of women cannot take hormones due to the increased risk of neoplasms. A fairly effective alternative to HRT are phytoestrogens – plant extracts containing substances that can bind to estrogen receptors and partially alleviate discomfort.

The possibilities of aromatherapy to restore hormonal balance and eliminate unpleasant hot flashes and dry mucous membranes are less well known. The great advantage of essential oils is their dual effect on the body: they act simultaneously on both a physical and an emotional level.

Exceptionally beneficial for the female hormonal sphere is the essential oil of clary sage. The natural soothing components included in its composition – linalool and linalyl acetate – help relieve muscle tension, eliminate psychological stress, balance the sympathetic nervous system, and have a mild regulating effect on the pituitary gland. Additionally, clary sage contains a specific active substance called sclareol, which has a comprehensive balancing effect on the female reproductive system. It can bind to estrogen receptors in various tissues of the body. This helps to equalize the hormonal fluctuations characteristic of menopause, and thereby alleviate many unpleasant symptoms.
