During evolution, stinging plants have developed a unique protective mechanism: the surface of their stems and leaves is covered with fragile hairs, which contain caustic substances. For example, in nettle it is a mixture of formic acid and neurotransmitters that trigger inflammation – histamine and choline. When touching a plant, we break off the sharp ends of the hairs, and our skin receives an injection of substances that trigger an acute inflammatory process with stinging pain, blisters and itching.

There is an extensive list of plants whose sap can cause significant discomfort on the skin and cause local redness. In the Mediterranean, it is primarily euphorbia, varieties of ivy and umbrella plants. In the middle zone, this risk is most often associated with nettle, hogweed, buttercup, celandine and primrose. Many popular indoor plants, such as croton and dieffenbachia, are also potentially dangerous. Even ordinary marigolds can provoke a reaction in people with sensitive skin.

Of course, it is best to avoid contact with caustic and stinging plant species, and to use gloves by looked after potentially dangerous indoor plants, especially when pruning and transplanting. If the irritation does occur, it should quickly rinsed the affected area with cold water and apply a soothing remedy that should “extinguish” the reaction.
